12 days birding in Columbia
Colombia, the most bird-rich country on Earth, is a dream destination for any serious birder. With more than 1,900 recorded bird species and a growing ecotourism infrastructure, it offers an unbeatable combination of biodiversity and accessibility. This 12-day tour is designed to maximize species count while still allowing time to savor the landscapes, food, and culture that make Colombia so unique. We begin our adventure in the lush Magdalena Valley, exploring the dry forests of the Camino del Retorno and the bird-laden wetlands near Honda. From there, we ascend into the misty highlands of the Central Andes, where tanagers, hummingbirds, and antpittas await at world-renowned reserves like Rio Blanco and Hacienda El Bosque. After a few days chasing mixed flocks and soaking in the cool mountain air, we drop down into the coffee-growing region near Manizales. Here, we’ll visit cloud forest preserves filled with orchids and toucans before continuing on to the famed Anchicayá Valley in the Chocó bioregion—a global hotspot for endemic species. Expect to see stunning species like the Multicolored Tanager, Toucan Barbet, and Andean Cock-of-the-rock (yes, the rockstar of the neotropics). Our final stretch takes us into the tropical lowlands of the Cauca Valley and the forested foothills near Cali, where we’ll end our trip on a high note with a colorful parade of tanagers, woodcreepers, and manakins. This trip routinely delivers 400+ species and offers excellent photo ops for everything from toucans to owls. With expert bilingual guides, comfortable eco-lodges, and a max group size of 8, this tour is ideal for both serious listers and birders looking for a more relaxed, immersive experience in one of the most exciting birding destinations on the planet.
